Our Next Concert

Saturday 20 March 2010, 7.45pm:
March Concert - 2009/10 Season

This concert sees a welcome return of talented local violinist, Eloisa-Fleur Thom, who first played as a soloist with the FSO at the age of 12 when a pupil at Calthorpe Park School in Fleet. Now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, she joins the Orchestra to perform Saint Saens` melodic and expressive Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor. The programme also includes Schumann`s 2nd Symphony, whose uplifting tone belies the composer`s depression, which affected the completion of the work. The opening work of the concert is Mendelssohn`s overture, The Fair Melusina, which was inspired by a Constantin Kreutzer opera whose music Mendelssohn considered so inadequate that he composed his own overture to express \"its themes and moods\"! The other work in the programme is a set of pastiche airs and dances originally written by Delibes for the Victor Hugo play, \"Le roi s`amuse\", which is better known in its operatic version as Verdi`s Rigoletto.

Celebrating 88 years of orchestral music-making

Orchestra

The Farnborough Symphony Orchestra serves the local community in North East Hampshire and is supported by organizations active in the district, including Rushmoor Borough Council and Slough Estates (the developers of the Farnborough Heritage Site). It aims to perform a varied programme of orchestral music to a high standard and provide its members with the opportunity to play a symphonic repertoire under a professional conductor.

Founded in 1922 as the Royal Aircraft Establishment Orchestral Society, it has a long history of performing in the local area and currently presents four concerts each season. Programmes often feature young soloists at the outset of their careers, or established artists.

Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings in Wesley Hall, Farnborough, Hampshire. Membership, subject to requirements, is open to all amateur players of Grade 8 standard or higher.

The F.S.O. is affiliated to "Making Music" and is a registered charity (number 293178) proudly supported by
